An Unexpected Journey

Yes we can admit to being hooked on adventure biking and luckily for us the list of where to go is getting longer, not shorter. The pattern seems to be an autumnal migration  for 3 months of peddling adventures. Our tyres have gotten fatter, our loads are getting smaller, and the roads/trails are getting quieter and rougher.

The bottom third of South America was our first long trip taken in a southbound direction, followed by a northbound trip Santiago to Cusco. Our third trip was a tough but incredible journey along Peru’s Great Divide inspired by Harriet and Neils Andes by Bike journeys.

In 2015 we found ourselves in the Indian Himalaya savouring the rough roads and tasty food that the Indian Himalaya had to offer and for something completely different in 2016 we are riding the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in the US of A.

In 2017 we headed to Central Asia to ride from Dushanbe (the capital of Tajikistan) to Bishkek (the capital of Kyrgyzstan) in a round about fashion..

In the NZ winter of 2018 we returned to Huaraz to continue up the Peru Divide mountains into Equador and onto the Trans Equador Mountain Bike Route.

At the end of 2018 we had an impromptu trip to Australia to follow a route through the Australian Alps, loosely following the Hunt1000 from Canberra to Melbourne.

In 2019 we had ‘Georgia on our minds’ and had an amazing trip thru Georgia and were in the early days of Armenia when I had a meeting with a stallion on a rope and the stallion won! So unfortunately we had to truncate that trip.

Of course then came the days/years of COVID and we enjoyed some local biking – no shortage of it in our own country – before the offshore bike trails were calling to us. One in particular The Baja Divide was shouting the loudest and got our attention. Not getting any younger we figured we should tackle the Baja ride while we could! And off we headed to Mexico Boxing Day 2022.

Restless legs just before the ski season 2023…. Australia hinterland and outback beckoned – a short flight and another great adventure..

In 2024 we spied the SAND route on the bikepackingdotcom website. Johan Wahl’s description by words and images gave us the impetus and confidence to head to South Africa and bike the smaller roads through to Namibia – new environments and challenges, another amazing trip.
